CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM
Introduction
Disasters occur naturally. People may not know when it will come and how things will happen. Examples of these are the flashfloods and earthquakes which are natural phenomena that even scientist cannot predict when it will happen. These phenomena are caused by nature. These bring many effects to humans. Lost of properties, crops, and worst of all, lost of lives. Man, women, children or adults cannot escape from these disasters.
Flashfloods are mainly caused by heavy rains wherein water from mountains, lakes, swamps, and rivers overflow and ran through the community. It isassociated with a severe thunderstorm, hurricane, or tropical storm. It may also occur after the collapse of a natural ice or debris dam, or a human structure such as a man-made dam. Barangays, cities, and the whole country may become affected when water extremely flow causing the lower areas to sink.
Earthquakes are caused by volcanic eruption or unpredictable movement of tectonic plates causing the land to shake. Experts cannot identify when and where it will occur unless it already happened. Severe earthquake may also lead to the occurrence of tsunamis. It can also cause fires by damaging electrical power or gas lines. In the event of water mains rupturing and a loss of pressure, it may also become difficult to stop the spread of a fire once it has started. There are many more effects of earthquakes.
People living in this complex planet must be aware of these unpredictable natural phenomena. The best way to do is to be aware about these things and know the things that should be done before, during, and after this disasters occur so as how to cope with it.
Statement of the Problem
This advocacy aims to tell the community what to do when these calamities occur. Disasters are natural phenomena which may occur anytime and anywhere.
Specifically, this aims to answer the following:
1. What are the causes of flashflood and earthquakes?
2. What precautionary measures should be done when flashfloods and earthquakes occur?
3. What are the effects of flashfloods and earthquakes to humans and to the environment?
Scope and Delimitation
This advocacy gives only focus to the causes, precautionary measures, and the effects of natural disasters specifically flashfloods and earthquakes to humans and to the environment. It had been conducted From February to March 2013 at Lagao National High School and Ireneo Santiago Sr. National High School. Two sections namely 2nd year Cedar, 3rd year Pearl for LNHS and 2ndyear and 3rd year Special Program for Journalism classes for ISNHSsre the respondents of the advocacy
.
Significance of the Study
The advocacy is designed to advocate about the natural disasters specifically flashfloods and earthquakes and to discuss the causes and effects of these phenomena to humans and to the environment.
To the students. They will be aware about these natural catastrophes and will have knowledge about its cause and effects and what to do during and after it happened.
To the advocators. They will have knowledge about these phenomena and will be trained to face the crowd and impart knowledge in preparation for their profession which is teaching.
To the Community. They will be aware about the different natural disasters, its cause and effect to humans and to the environment.
To the Environment. People will know the importance of the environment. And they will learn on how to conserve it.
